Poppy – This year's songbird
The 2022 bird is Poppy, inspired by the tranquillity and presence Kay Bojesen felt when he worked. It takes focus and contemplation to be creative and make something from nothing, and Poppy reminds us of this with her subtle red shades that exude an air of calm. Her body is a deep burgundy, complimented by beautiful terracotta head and shiny orange legs and beak. The result is an elegant, congruous bird with a balanced and classic look.
Kay Bojesen is known for creating original stories out of wood, and in the summer of 2021 we asked all Kay Bojesen’s fans to help us continue his stories. We designed two new songbirds, each with their own wonderful personality and pretty colours, and then decided which one to add to Kay Bojesen’s bird collection.
Poppy is produced in a limited number and is engraved with the year. She is slightly smaller than the classic songbird, but just as charming. Poppy is made from FSC-certified beech wood, which guarantees that the trees are planted, cultivated and felled responsibly. Kay Bojesen’s songbirds are the perfect example of how with just a simple design he managed to give his figures life and soul, so that to this day they spark our imagination and speak to the child in all of us, across all generations.

The Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep
A new museum entitled H.C. Andersen’s House has opened in Odense, and in its honour you can now find some of the most famous and beloved characters from the world-famous fairy tales in Kay Bojesen’s collection. Already on the shelves of the museum shop in Odense and on rosendahl.com, the Nightingale has now been joined by the Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep.
The story continues in wood
In the fairy tale of the Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, the old Chinese mandarin wants the Shepherdess to marry the Wooden Devil. The couple fall in love and flee through the chimney and out into the big world, but it proves too much for the Shepherdess.

In the fairy tale of the Shepherdess and the Chimney Sweep, the old Chinese mandarin wants the Shepherdess to marry the Wooden Devil. The couple fall in love and flee through the chimney and out into the big world, but it proves too much for the Shepherdess.
So they return, and fortunately the situation has changed so that the old Chinese mandarin can no longer determine the couple’s fate. Together they go through fire and water to get to each other, and love wins in the end.
Wood only comes to life when it is given a story. The Shepherdess looks wonderful in Kay Bojesen’s interpretation, with gilded shoes, a hat with gold details and a shepherdess staff – just as she is described in Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tale. Her heart-shaped mouth symbolises her sweetness and innocence. She is beautiful and graceful on her own.The Chimney Sweep stands proudly with his ladder and smart uniform with shiny buttons, white scarf and the iconic high hat. He is almost majestic, and as Hans Christian Andersen put it: “... the porcelain master could just as easily have turned him into a prince, because he was one.” On his own, the Chimney Sweep is wonderful and elegant, and together with the Shepherdess, they become a symbol of love and unity.

Menageri series
Kay Bojesen’s original wooden designs are therefore not limited to his famous figures. Functional items for the home make up a whole chapter in his diverse design heritage.
Danish design in the kitchen
Under the name Menageri, Kay Bojesen designed an elegant series in the 1940s that includes bowls, cutlery sets, pepper mills, egg cups and much more – all made of wood with the same minimalist, soft, organic design typical of Kay Bojesen’s other work.

The series now includes a solid and practical chopping board in FSC-certified oak – perfect for the kitchen when cutting, chopping and slicing. It is beautifully crafted and comes in a round, soft shape that makes it comfortable to handle on a daily basis. Work has also gone into giving the natural oak a finish that is pleasant to the touch, so that the chopping board is not only an aesthetic but also tactile experience.
Original design from Kay Bojesen
Collectors and connoisseurs will recognise the chopping board as the original design by Kay Bojesensen, now reintroduced in oak. The practical juice groove ensures that excess juice is collected in the corner and doesn't flow out over the worktop. The juice groove is also decorative and gives the chopping board its own unique look, so that it also looks decorative when left on display in the kitchen. The new chopping board is the perfect gift idea for e.g. the wedding couple who are about to settle into a new home – or the student who will be moving out of home. A good chopping board is indispensable in the kitchen and a gift you can enjoy for a lifetime.

Kay Bojesen designed with his heart, a sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye and when he made his wooden figures, he did so from a child's perspective.
