Kay Bojesen was inspired by several uniformed agencies, which can be seen in the Standard bearer and Policeman, among other figurines. The original Marine figurine has a charming expression with a slimmer silhouette and the hat at an angle. The dark blue uniform, the slanted hat and the striped scarf makes a beautiful maritime look. Kay Bojesen went on a voyage and on his way, he sailed as the only registered passenger on a Russian cargo ship named Minsk. Kay Bojesen’s statement about the sailors read “They all became my friends and the ship my home”.

Kay Bojesen also worked based on the philosophy that wood only comes to life when it gets a story – a philosophy that was consistent with all his figures.
