Why you should buy a travel mug

If you’re a passionate coffee drinker, you probably already have a good collection of coffee cups and mugs in your kitchen cupboard. You have mugs for your morning coffee, for your afternoon coffee and, of course, for your evening coffee after dinner. But if you have a busy working day, you might not always have the time to enjoy your coffee properly. In the morning it’s often a little rushed because you have to get dressed, maybe even check your emails and read the news, and if you have children, they also need help getting ready so that everyone can leave on time. And you had to leave that cup of freshly brewed morning coffee, which you had been looking forward to waking you up slowly as you mustered up the energy reserves for the day, half full on the kitchen counter. It's a shame, but fortunately there’s advice to hand. Try investing in a travel cup that makes it possible to take your coffee with you on-the-go.

A travel cup is a thermo jug and a cup in one. It's designed with a double wall that insulates your drink so that it stays warm for several hours. At the same time, it has a smart lid that you can drink from directly from the cup, and which keeps it sealed when you close it again. The travel cup is thus a great investment if you want to enjoy your morning coffee in the car or train on the way to work.

Find the best cup

People can have very different opinions about how they prefer to drink their coffee. Some prefer a coffee cup with a saucer, while others prefer to drink it in a thermal mug. But when you want your coffee to-go, most people agree that it should be in a good container that keeps the coffee hot and doesn't burn their fingers. When choosing your new travel cup, it’s worth exploring the selection, because it makes a difference what model and type you choose. How good the cup is at keeping your drink warm can vary greatly, and this is precisely what makes the cup so versatile and practical. The design can also be a deciding factor. Some models come in a variety of colours, so you can choose the one that best reflects your personality.

Another important thing is that your travel mug is good to hold. When you’re in the car, train or bus, you want to have a good grip on the mug so you don't drop it. Look for mugs with silicone, as this will give you the perfect grip for the mug. The lid is another important element that needs to be high quality, as mentioned. The best lids have a click function so you can operate them with one hand. You’ll appreciate this when you’re busy driving, carrying your work bag or talking on the phone with your other hand. Find the right size

You can then decide for yourself whether this is appropriate for you. Your mug should be big enough to hold the coffee, tea or cold drink you want, but it shouldn't be too big in relation to how much you can drink. If you buy a mug that's too large and only fill it a quarter or half full, it will reduce the insulation capacity. If you need more than the typical 30 cl that many travel mugs hold, it may be worth considering whether you would rather buy a thermal mug, which is often a little bigger, or a vacuum jug that can hold a lot more.

Bring your travel mug to the coffee shop

A travel mug has many more advantages. Naturally, the obvious benefit is that you can bring your coffee or tea with you when you leave the house. But there's also another advantage to the cup. It means that you save a lot of plastic and paper cups, which would otherwise have been given to you at your local coffee shop. If you drink coffee every morning, think about how many plastic cups you use in a month – or a year – the number is dizzyingly high. So by having your own travel cup, you are showing consideration for the environment. Even better, a number of coffee shops here in Denmark offer a discount on your coffee when you bring your own mug. That’s why it’s worth considering whether you should visit your favourite barista once in a while to get a morning top-up of their best coffee at a reduced price.  

Where can you use your cup?

A travel mug is an incredibly practical invention that can help make your everyday life easier. As mentioned, you can use it to take your morning coffee or tea with you out the door in the morning. But the mug can be used for more than that. Not only does it keep hot drinks hot, it also insulates the cold drinks. This means that if you’re planning a trip to the beach with a couple of friends and you want a little picnic, you can bring cold drinks. Of course, if you are a big party you could also consider bringing a vacuum jug, as it can hold much more than a single mug. But the point is that the travel mug can store ice-cold water, soft drinks, juice or even wine or Asti if you feel like some with your lunch. After an hour in the sun, you will appreciate being able to drink a cold drink to cool down and really enjoy the taste, just as if you had taken the drink directly out of the fridge. When winter arrives, you can take the cup with you for a walk in the forest one afternoon just before the sun sets. Perhaps you’ll find a small wooden bench or a tree stump where you can rest for a moment and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate that you’ve brought from home. The possibilities are many.

Caring for your travel cup

Of course, when you have a new travel mug, you also want it to last a long time and stay clean. Bacteria and fungal spores can easily develop in and on the materials, which is why it's important that you wash the mug every time you use it. If it's dishwasher-safe, disassemble the parts and simply place them in the dishwasher. Otherwise, use the washing-up brush and some detergent. It may seem like a boring job, but it doesn't take very long. Once you have finished washing and rinsing it, place the mug upside down to air dry until the next day when you'll need it again. It's a good idea to place it at an angle on top of the lid so that air gets into the mug.
