Where does the tradition of Advent candles come from?
According to the Danish Historical Council, Advent candles are a relatively new tradition in Denmark. It became widespread after World War II but, already in 1942, during the German occupation, the well-known Danish company Asp-Holmblad sold its first mass-produced Advent candles. The candles were originally called the Jakob candle, after Jakob’s dream from the Old Testament, but the name did not really make a splash in Denmark. The factory therefore renamed the candle to Advent Candle No. 1, which is still available today.
Even though the Advent candle only became a folk tradition during the post-war period, sources do indicate that the tradition existed before then. The first description of an Advent candle can be found in the 1935 book “Smaa Fester glade Gæster” (Small Parties, Happy Guests) by Lis Byrdal. In this book, Byrdal describes how to make your own Advent candle by drawing 24 lines on a candle using a black marker pen. Therefore, it must be assumed that it was a tradition, but perhaps not among the entire Danish population; however, it must have existed in at least a few individual households around the kingdom. Since the days when the first Advent candles were made in people's homes, and thereafter in a factory, many different kinds of these candles have hit the market. They are now available in almost any shape, colour and size. You can get them as block candles and taper candles, in white or an assortment of colours, and with or without nostalgic Christmas motifs. All of these different styles are reflected on this page.
Create a beautiful Christmas decoration
As we approach 1 December and find the right Advent candle, we then need to consider how we will decorate it. A tradition in Denmark is to surround it with a beautiful, homemade Christmas decoration, and thus bring a little bit of nature indoors. A Christmas decoration is a wonderful way to bring personality and character into your home and, with a few tools and a little dexterity, you can easily make your own. It doesn't have to be difficult to make a Christmas decoration.
You can make the decoration on a platter or in a beautiful Lyngby vase, which will form the perfect base for your candle. You can use some clay on a dish and then decorate it with cones, moss, bark and baubles. If you choose to use a vase, we recommend using oasis foam to protect the vase. When the oasis foam is wet and cut to size, place it in the vase and use floral wire to decorate. Wrap the wire around the cones and decorate with moss, pine needles, stars, and gold glitter for a beautiful look.
Match it with the perfect candlestick
If you don't feel creative, you could easily use a beautiful candlestick to adorn the candle. You could use a white or glass candlestick to create a minimalist and simple look on your table. A simple candlestick will allow all focus to be on the Advent candle, with its gorgeous Christmas pattern and numbers. If, on the other hand, you prefer going all out during Christmas, you could also supplement your candle with an Advent candlestick that oozes Christmas spirit and cosiness. A beautiful Advent candlestick in polished white porcelain, decorated with the most beautiful details, gives you a design with an elegant and eye-catching finish. And if it’s made to match the Advent candle and other products from its range, you’ll get a consistent look. An advent candlestick is perfect for decorating your Christmas table during December, but you can also use it without Advent candles when you just want to add a little something extra to your table setting.
Candles create cosiness and joy
When darkness falls, there’s nothing more cosy than lighting candles and feeling tranquility settle. Candles do something very special, and can help to create well-being and cosiness when you need it most. The special feature of the Advent candle is that it creates anticipation and magic in the room as soon as it is lit. You can use it in a variety of ways. Either in the morning, after brewing the first cup of coffee of the day and sitting down with your breakfast. Here, the glow of the Advent candle will help to give you a good start to the day. You can also light it up during dinner when the family gathers at the table to eat and talk about the day’s events. In the living room at night, you could also light the candle while enjoying a good book or series on Netflix. Just remember to keep an eye on the candle so it does not burn down further than intended.
