The Kay Bojesen monkey is is a high-quality piece of craftsmanship that accompanies us from child to adult at every stage of our lives, and is also an incredibly popular gift for those you love. And with this cute figure, you don't just get classic Danish design from 1951. 

You also get a unique Monkey from Kay Bojesen. No two of them are alike. And when the popular figure is allowed to hang out – as it does in many homes – the different nuances in the wood change and give the already unique Kay Bojesen Monkey even more personality. Over time, the affects of light and air will change any colour nuances in the wood to a more uniform, warm golden brown tone.

The monkey is available in small, medium and large versions. Common to them all is that they are original wood creations. Kay Bojesen always gave his wooden figures a special soul. Each one also got its own story, and with their smiling lines, unique shapes and vibrant wood they have survived many generations. According to Kay Bojesen, wood only comes to life when it has a story.

The monkey is also available in a Reworked anniversary edition, which is a special edition of the iconic Monkey made form residual wood. The anniversary monkey is both a celebration and a standpoint. In 2021 in marked the 70th anniversary of Kay Bojesen cutting the first smiling lines into the classic Monkey. And a standpoint because the Anniversary Monkey was born out of a principle of responsibility in craftsmanship and design. 

As the new family member is made from residual wood, there may be variations in wood types, such as teak, walnut, oak, ash, maple, limba and mahogany. We cannot guarantee which woods each of the Anniversary Monkeys are produced from. This depends on the availability of residual wood. But we can guarantee that each Anniversary Monkey will be even more unique than the original classic if possible. 

The process of processing the Anniversary Monkey is considerably more demanding than the well-known Monkey in teak and limba, which is turned out of one piece of wood and, like its original siblings in the monkey family, is produced in a high quality and with great craftsmanship. Many pieces of wood need to be adapted and put together, and this places high demands on both the craftsmanship and the quality of the wood. 

The re-worked Monkey is based on the principle of upcycling, and the ambition is to use the resources that would otherwise have been wasted. In this way, the Reworked Monkey gives new life to wood and can be displayed - or hung - as a responsible ambassador for a new and modern interpretation of the original wooden stories of which Kay Bojesen was a true master. The result is a Monkey that, through craftsmanship and design, unites heritage, wood types and shades – a true collector’s item with its own unique expression and story. The special edition has a 70th anniversary stamp on the paw and comes in a limited edition in a special wooden anniversary box. 

The famous Kay Bojesen Monkey was actually created when Kay Bojesen wanted to make a hook for his children, but instead he ended up making a world-famous Danish design icon. Since then, the monkey has come in several different sizes and versions, and the many much-loved members of the monkey herd continue to find their way onto countless wish lists and gift tables around the world.

This product is a historical toy reproduction appropriate for collectors over the age of 14. 
Solid and painted wood cannot tolerate direct sunlight or direct heat, e.g. from a wood-burning stove or being positioned too close to a radiator. This could discolour and dry out the wood, causing cracks.  For oiled, wooden products, please note that from the start, excess oil from production can rub off on surfaces and stain them. As time goes by, the excess oil will work its way into the wood. In the meantime, consider the possibility of stained surfaces when deciding where to place your new treasure! Applying oil will give the wood a glow, and the colour will become darker, with a deeper tone.

CARE OF THE MISTER. To clean the pump unit, fill the bottle with warm soapy water. Replace the pump unit and screw bottle collar in place. Spray to allow the soapy water to run through the pump unit. Repeat with clean warm water to remove any soap residue. Only the glass part of the mister can be placed in the dishwasher.

Kay Bojesen is synonymous with original Danish design. He remains one of the biggest Danish designers from the 1900s, and represents the story of one of the strongest and most loved brands in Danish design history, with classics in a class of their own. For decade after decade, he crafted original stories out of wood, resulting in a creative, playful world filled with love, smiling lines and unique shapes.
He specialised in the smaller but highly decorative objects for the home, and his iconic wooden monkey has become a particularly strong graphic design object that is known and loved by all ages. Today, the monkey can be found in almost all Danish homes and is not only a part of Danish design culture, but also a part of the everyday life of Danes.
Kay Bojesen trained as a silversmith in 1910 after having been apprentice at Georg Jensen. Kay Bojesen was one of the first Danish artisans to be impressed by functionalism. He was one of the initiators of 'Den Permanente' (The Permanent), a business and showcase that presented the best in Danish and Scandinavian design for many decades. And the clean lines that we know from Danish furniture design and architecture from that same era are clearly visible in Kay Bojesen’s work. 
1919 marked the start of a new era for Kay Bojesen. He got married and had his son Otto. And it helped to spark Kay Bojesen’s fascination with the world of children, toys and wood and reminded him of his own childhood when his father would cut wooden figures for him and encouraged his children to be inventive, use their imagination and have fun.
The encouraging words from Kay Bojesen’s father bore fruit. And in the 1930s, Kay Bojesen began to seriously cultivate his interest in working in wood. He created a series of wooden animals that lived up to his philosophy that design should be round, soft and feel good in your hand. Kay Bojesen did not want to create faithful copies of real life animals or to be too sophisticated or detailed in his designs. No, he wanted to create imaginative variations in a design that was based on a childlike world, where the 'lines had to smile'. 
The wooden toys had to be simple, sturdy and inspire play. And the popular and world-famous designer was unrivalled as a creator of wooden figures with soul, humour and a twinkle in their eye. In his lifetime, Kay Bojesen was considered to represent the fun side of Danish arts and crafts.
Today, Kay Bojesen is one of Denmark’s biggest design names and his crafts are some of the most sought-after in Danish design. Kay Bojesen kept his childish curiosity and joie de vivre until the very end. And with more than 2,000 pieces of handicrafts, he is one of the most productive Danish artisans ever. In addition to the iconic wooden figures and animals, his production also includes the elegant and luxurious Menageri series with functional items for the kitchen and the rest of the home. 
Kay Bojesen was able to turn wood into original stories like no other. With his deep passion for craftsmanship and eye for detail, over the years he created an imaginative world of figures and objects, each one with its own unique story. As such, he became one of Denmark’s greatest craftsmen, and his designs are some of the most sought-after and will continue to retain a firm place in Danish design history.
