Red wine glasses

The red wine glass is the biggest type of wine glass. It comes in different sizes however, which affect everything from the aroma of the wine and how much you get in your mouth at a time, to how the wine is experienced in the mouth. A classic red wine glass is the Bordeaux glass, which has a slightly narrower bowl than ordinary red wine glasses. The glass is also slightly taller. This means that the red wine reaches the back of your mouth first, so that you can really taste the aroma and strength of the wine. The Bordeaux glass is particularly good for slightly heavy wines such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. If you prefer lighter wines that benefit from a little aeration, then the Bourgogne glass is perfect. It has a wider bowl and is also slightly shorter than the Bordeaux glass. As the name suggests, this glass is suitable for Bourgogne wines as well as Barolo, Amarone and Australian Shiraz varieties. Swirl the wine around the glass for a better taste

If you want to help the glass and the wine on its way, you can swirl the wine around the glass to release more aromas. The aroma is an important element of the wine experience, and you can enhance the wine's bouquet by swirling it around the bowl of the glass before you smell and taste it. You may have seen the pros do it. Perhaps you’ve tried it yourself, but as you’ve probably discovered, it can be a bit difficult to do at first without spilling your drink or looking rather clumsy. In order to master the technique, practice it with your glass on the table. Hold the stem of the glass and slide it around in a circle while keeping the base on the table. In this way, the wine is aerated and the wonderful aromas are released.

How to hold the wine glass correctly

A wine glass can have both a short and a long stem, but it will always have one. This is because the stem helps to prevent you from heating the wine with your hands when you hold the glass. It's also why you should always hold the glass by the stem. It’s not to look smart, but rather so you avoid warming the red wine, which will cause the taste of the alcohol to drown out the aromas, not to mention making the glass greasy. It may take a bit of practice, but practice makes perfect, as they say.

Storing your wine glasses

Wine glasses must always face upwards, and this is due to several factors. The opening of the glass is more fragile and can therefore break more easily than the base. What's more, a damp, enclosed environment may develop inside the glass if you leave it facing downwards. Either if there is a little residual water left in the glass after you have dried it, or if the air from the cupboard material penetrates the glass. So you should always place the glass the right way up when you put it back in the cupboard.

How to wash your wine glasses

We've all been there. Your dinner guests have gone home. The table is still set with tableware and the tablecloth, and unfortunately, the dishes won't take care of themselves. Without hesitation, the easiest way to manage it is to put all your dishes, glassware and wine glasses in the dishwasher in one go, but you’re not quite comfortable with the thought of it. Is this possible without damaging your precious glassware?

Once upon a time, the answer would have been no. In the past, the dishwasher did not have nearly as many programs to choose from. Today, however, most machines come with special glass programmes designed for wine glasses and other glassware. When you need to wash your red and white wine glasses in the machine, it's important that you place them so that they're stable and won't fall over and break during the washing cycle. Your dishwasher may have a special glass holder. Otherwise, they can be purchased if you wish. You can then find the special glass program or similar, which will have a short washing time and the temperature that's no higher than 35–45 degrees. Make sure that there is enough rinse aid and salt in the dishwasher before you turn it on. Once the program is finished, open the door immediately to allow the glasses to air. Then, wipe the wine glasses with a tea towel and be especially careful under the base and at the bottom of the glass, where a little water often accumulates.
