What makes a good Mother’s Day gift?
Mother’s Day is a celebration of all mothers. It is the day when we put the country’s mothers in focus and give them our attention. It could be your own mother, your wife or another mother you know who deserves praise and recognition. An obvious way to show love for the mother in your life is a floral bouquet. This is the choice of many men, as most women are happy to receive flowers.
If you want to give your children’s mother a thoughtful gift, the children can make a drawing for her. This is, of course, most relevant when the children are small and cannot find a gift themselves. Getting homemade drawings and hugs on Mother’s Day is a wonderful personal gift, but maybe you want to give her one thing that she can use in her everyday life? Luckily, there is plenty of inspiration to be found, from vases and decorations to gorgeous textiles and timeless gifts. Just read farther down the page.
What is Mother’s Day?
Mother’s Day is known in most parts of the world and it is simply about celebrating mother. It means the world to a mother to get thank you for everything she does on a daily basis for her children and family. Paying tribute to mom isn't just limited to one's own mother. Many fathers choose to give the mother of their children a gift. This is often the case if the children are not old enough to make or buy gifts themselves, and at the same time it shows the children that it is important to appreciate their mother. Mother’s Day is celebrated at different times around the world. In the United States, the day is celebrated on the second Sunday in May, while in Sweden it is celebrated on the last Sunday in May. In Denmark, it is also celebrated on the second Sunday in May.
The story behind Mother’s Day
The tradition of Mother’s Day dates back to 1872. The first person to get the idea for the day was American writer and women’s voting rights activist Julia Ward Howe. Originally, she wanted to celebrate Mother’s Day to promote peace and prevent war, since it is the mother who carries and brings life to the world. However, the idea did not really make its mark in society, and 35 years would pass before Ms. Anna Jarvis took the baton and succeeded in bringing the idea to life. She wanted to make the day known all over the country, so she worked to get Mother’s Day recognised in honour of the work done by her own mother and all the world's mothers. The idea spread throughout the US during the 1900s, and in 1929 it came to Denmark.
Initially, it was introduced in Denmark to raise money for mothers and widows who had lost a son or spouse in the war. After a few years, the collection went to the large organisation Mødrehjælpen, which to this day advises and helps mothers who are affected by sudden illness, divorce or unemployment, for example. Today, however, it is most common to celebrate the mother(s) in your own life with a bouquet of flowers or a gift to show your appreciation and love.
Mother is the best in the world
'Mother is the best in the world' says a song from the 1950s, and many children will agree. Mother is the one who is always there, ready to give comfort, care and love. When you have children, you suddenly discover all the little unseen things she did in her daily life, and you feel the joys and worries she felt. Putting others’ needs before your own can be difficult, and it often takes a lot to put yourself aside. Mother’s Day is therefore the best opportunity to show your mother that you appreciate everything she has done for you over time – that you acknowledge her efforts and thank her for doing her best, because fortunately most mothers have. At the same time, it is also a good reminder of the unconditional love and care found in the family.
Beautiful decor items
Mother’s Day is approaching, but how do you best show your mom that you care and have remembered her on the day? What makes a good Mother’s Day gift can be a very personal matter. First and foremost, it’s a question of interests and taste. Most women, however, like to make an effort to decorate their home, which is why items for the home are almost always a sure winner.
Maybe she collects dinnerware from Rosendahl, Holmegaard, Kähler or Lyngby Porcelæn? If so, she will probably enjoy a couple of dinner plates or dessert plates. You can also give her a couple of candleholders to put on the windowsill or on a shelf in the living room. A beautiful decorative vase for flowers or dried pampas grass is also a good idea. The same applies to a bonbonniere, in which she can store her jewellery or other trinkets in a stylish way. If she has a sweet tooth, to turn up the charm, you can fill it with her favourite sweets to add a personal touch. She is sure to appreciate your effort and recognise that you have made something special of the gift and the day.
Restful sleep for Mother
Most mums have periods in life when they sleep less well. It could be a restless baby, or perhaps worries about the teenager coming home late. There can be many reasons why a mother’s heart finds it difficult to rest, which is why you can help her along the way. Why not give your mum or your baby’s mum a beautiful nightgown in organic cotton? You can also give her a Juna pyjama set, with the look and feel of linen. She’ will look forward to wearing it when she slips into bed in the the warm summer evenings.
The timeless gift
Another idea is a timeless gift that most mums will love. Maybe she loves the iconic Kay Bojesen monkey she already has hanging from a kitchen shelf. Then she will be thrilled to get the zebra, rabbit or panda from the same series. A table lamp from Kähler or Rosendahl is also a gift she will appreciate.
The personal gift basket
If you are looking for a gift for a mother – whether she is your mother, daughter, sister, best friend or wife – she will be delighted to be given any number of things in home and interior design. For example, you can spoil her with a beautiful Mother's Day basket, in which you gather small favours for her, for example, a couple of tea towels, pot holders and an apron. You could also bake or buy her favourite pastries and add them. A gift basket could also contain a new mug, and if you know she loves tea, give her a tea set with tea bags, tea cup and teapot from the same series.
A gift basket is a great way to give a personal gift without necessarily having to be creative and make something yourself. You might want to team up with siblings to give your mum the best gift.
