70 years of iconic Bear

With its responsible approach, the Reworked Bear is both a celebration and a standpoint, born from a principle of responsibility in craftsmanship and design. In the production process, only surplus wood is used that is available, so each Reworked Bjørn will therefore look different depending on which types of wood are left over on the day they are produced.

The bears have been created by hand with love and care in exactly the same way as they have been since 1952, when the friendly Bear with open arms was born. The bear was originally inspired by a baby bear called Ursula from the zoo in Copenhagen, who was too small to live with the adult animals in the cage. Therefore, the head of the zoo kept the baby at home with him until it was old enough to live with the bigger bears. This sweet story inspired Bojesen to make the little bear figure.

The beauty and variation of the wood is the focal point of the new Reworked Bjørn, which marks the 70th anniversary of Kay Bojesen’s classic figures. It is composed of a gorgeous mix of different types of wood, e.g. teak, walnut, oak, ash and maple – all surplus and residual wood that would otherwise have been wasted. This gives the Reworked Bear an extra responsible dimension, so it doesn't only point back in time, but also forward.

Reworked Bear, wooden animals, Kay Bojesen
Kay Bojesen is synonymous with original Danish design. He didn't want to create exact replicas of real life animals or make them too sophisticated and detailed. Instead, they were to be based around the children's own world and give space for their imagination to unfold. He was ahead of his time, and with the new Reworked Bjørn we humbly build on Kay Bojesen’s heritage, paying tribute to the smiling lines that speak to the child in all of us.
